【Our HERITAGE】

Healing with medicinal plants is as old as mankind itself. The connection between man and his search for drugs in nature dates from the far past, of which there is ample evidence from various sources: written documents, preserved monuments, and even original plant medicines. The oldest written evidence of medicinal plants’ usage for preparation of drugs has been found on a Sumerian clay slab form Nagpur, approximately 5,000 years old. It comprise 12 recipes for drug preparation referring to over 250 various plants, some of them alkaloid such as poppy, henbane, and mandrake. Early 19th century was a turning point in the knowledge and use of medicinal plants. The discovery, substantiation, and isolation of alkaloids from poppy (1806), ipecacuanha (1817), quinine (1820), pomegranate (1878), and other plants, then the isolation of glycosides, marked the beginning of scientific pharmacy. With the upgrading of the chemical methods, other active substances from medicinal plants were also discovered such as tannins, saponosides, etheric oils, vitamins, hormones, etc. Almost all pharmacopoeias in the world proscribe plant drugs of real medicinal value. Countries like the United Kingdom, Russia, Germany have separated herbal pharmacopoeias, meanwhile, the efficiency of healing properties has been corroborated by experimental and clinical tests. Nowadays, many people are getting back to nature when it concerns their health. As a complement to modern medicine, they are interest in and turning to medicinal plants.

Let our journey begin and rediscover the hidden gems from ancient manuscripts.

TURKISH PINE TREE HONEY

TURKEY is an exceptionally rich country that plants had been used as active ingredients of medicinal plants and their production in different pharmaceutical forms.

Hence, it is also one of the richest regions of the world in terms of honey production and variety. It presents several biological activities and its use as a well-known medicine since ancient times.

Honey has antimicrobial, antiviral, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, anticancer, and immuno—suppressive activities. (Bogdanov et al., 2008)

Pine Honey (çam balı)

is a type of honeydew honey. It is an unusal honey which produced by bees that collect honeydew (sugary secretions) from a scale insect species called Marchalina hellenica, which lives on the sap of certain pine trees.

Pine Honey (çam balı) “Honey is a natural source of antioxidants, and among honeys, honeydew honey is the best,” says researcher Rosa Ana Pérez, who works at the Instituto Madrileño de Investigación y Desarrollo Rural, Agrario y Alimentario, in Madrid, Spain

The composition of honeydew varys by region of origin. As we said, generally speaking, it is a sugary liquid. Compared with nectar, it contains a lot of polysaccharides (oligarchs), especially pineal sugars. In addition to sugar, glycerine contains small amounts of amino acids, proteins, minerals, acids, trace elements and vitamins.
